To the delight of many golfers, last year Wilson debuted a new forged offering with the Wilson Staff Fi5 Irons, and this year with the introduction of the Wilson Staff Fw6 (Forged Wedge). Forged From 8620 carbon steel, the Wilson Staff Fw6 combines a traditional head shape with time-honored fluid-feel bore-through technology and Control Grooves, the aggressive groove design introduced by Wilson last year. The bore-through design increases the shaft insertion through the club head allowing for weight to be removed from the hosel and repositioned behind the face for optimal trajectories. The extended shaft also increases torsional stability at impact, and a TPU plastic plug on the sole absorbs vibration for a softer feel.
The Wilson Staff Control Grooves, which conform to USGA limits, are deeper and steeper grooves than industry standard and promote higher spin and more control around the green. WHile standard grooves have a 42.5° angle with rounded edges, Control grooves have a 32.5° angle and square edges. The square edges, which may scuff soft cover balls, result in more spin, more bite and better control. The Wilson Staff Fw6 Wedges feature a True Temper Dynamic Gold shaft with a .355-inch taper tip, and Golf Pride Tour Velvet full chord grips.
"Wilson has a long history and has continually been an industry leader within the wedge category," stated Tim Clarke, General Manager, WIlson Golf. "We are ecstatic to be able to return to our heritage and introduce a classically designed Wilson Staff forged line of wedges that incorporates such time tested advancements like the bore through hosel design and our recent introduction of Control Grooves."
From Gene Sarazen's original sand wedge designs in 1932 to the Dyna-Powered wedges that dominated the game in the '50's and '60's to the designs from master clubmaker Robert Mendralla, the Wilson Staff Fw6 wedges will only add to Wilson's historical influence in the wedge category. Wilson wedges have been played by some of the most famous names in the history of the sport and in fact, Wilson wedges have won more than 1,500 PGA Tournaments (including two by Padraig Harrington in 2005) and an amazing 79 Majors.
Wilson has always relied heavily on input from the WIlson Staff advisors like Sarazen, Sam Snead, and Billy Casper and it's no different today as Wilson Staff Tour professional Padraig Harrington continues to be instrumental in the development of Wilson wedges, particularly the PH Wedge, Wilson Staff Tw5, and now the Wilson staff Fw6 line.
The WIlson Staff Fw6 Wedges will be offered in five models: Gap (52°/6° bounce); Sand (54°/8° bounce); Sand (56°/10° bounce); Lob (58°/12° bounce); Lob (60°/8° bounce); The wedges will be available at pro and golf specialty shops for $120 per club.
