Women currently make up the fastest growing group taking up golf. Course and golf academys have seen a 35% increase in beginning female golfers over the past 5 years and women currently make up over a 1/4 of all golfers in the United States.
There are several reasons women are taking up golf, but according to most beginning golfers, it's for business reasons. Women out in the workforce are finding themselves competing with their male collegues not only in the office, but on the course. Many corporate outings are increasingly focused around country clubs and golf outings and we don't want to be left out.
Another reason women start playing golf is because their husbands and boyfriends enjoy it. It can become 4 to 5 hours of quality time and communication. And, ladies, they're captive! Better yet, we've got the handicapping system, so it's all good. I've had several single friends say they've taken up golf to meet cute guys. Listen, they're more likely to be on the golf course than at the grocery store.
Younger girls have recently been drawn to golf because of LPGA icons like Annika Sorenstram and Michelle Wie. Both Annika and Michelle have played in men's PGA events. Women are now able to start out in golf and have the dream of it becoming their profession. More then ever before young women are attending college on golf scholarships and entering the professional world of golf at an ever increasing rate.
Courses and resorts are beginning to stand up and take notice of the feminine influence and buying power women golfers are yielding. Many resorts have begun looking into new ways to draw in female golfers. Bring on the pamper with the putt, I say. A glass of champagne from the "beer" cart? Could it be true? A golf and spa package just sounds right, doesn't it ladies?
Having said all of that, there are some things, as women, we need to adhere to on the course. Most men say their number one complaint about women on the course is our "pace of play". Following the rules and ettiquette are essential, not only to having a good time, but maintaining the integrity of the sport for all who play. I would suggest taking several lessons before hitting the greens and making sure you know the rules and most importantly, for us women, the dress code. |
