Where do you put rakes?
Written by JAMES McAFEE

First, let's try to use the correct term when referring to those depressions with sand in them. They are bunkers, not sand traps.
Rakes are a necessary evil because of these bunkers. The question arises about where they should be placed. Inside or outside of the bunkers?
I recall playing in a tournament where my fellow competitor twice saw his drives headed for fairway bunkers stay out of the hazards because of rakes left outside the bunkers.

The Pitch Shot
DECEMBER 2007 TIPS OF THE MONTH

In this month’s tip, we are going to help you with how to hit a pitch shot. A pitch shot is a short shot from just off the green. By definition, the ball will fly farther than it rolls. One of the things that we see in our golf schools is people are trying to do too much with the golf club. They use the hands too much, hinging the wrist, making too big of a backswing, and then they have to decelerate to get to the golf ball. And that, of course, produces a very inconsistent golf shot. Another thing that we see is the backswing will get very short and they have to over-accelerate to advance the ball the distance they want to go. This shot is also very inconsistent.

Set Up in Balance
Balance in all sports is very important.   Whether we are shooting a basket, blocking a defender or lifting weights, we want our body to be in the most balanced position possible.  The same holds true for the golf swing.  Sometimes balance at address is overlooked and we can hardly expect to stay balanced during the swing if we don’t start in a balanced position.

Keep it Straight or let it Arc
Written by Brian Smith
For as long as I can remember there has been a lot of discussion about the putting stroke and whether the putter should travel straight back and through or should it travel on an arc.  I can remember several years ago attending a two-day Teaching Seminar, in San Antonio, where we covered many valuable teaching topics, techniques, and had a lot of great discussion.  Most of which were, for the most part, fairly non-confrontational and agreed upon.  Then around the middle of the second day the topic of “the putting stroke” was brought up and the whole atmosphere changed and everyone seemed to have a firm opinion on what the putter should do and what the stroke should be like.  Needless to say agreement was not an easy thing to reach.  Some of the teachers believed the putter should travel straight back and straight through while staying square to the target.  Yet others believed the putter should travel on an arc while the face of the putter opens slightly on the back swing and closes on the through swing.  I always have and always will proclaim it does both.  That’s right it does both.

How to move the ball
Written by Matt Swanson

Have you ever wondered how you can actually control the golf ball, bend it around trees or over water on a wide arc and actually bring it back to your intended target like the pros do? Without the wild miss-hits? For that we go to Matt Swanson, Director of Instruction at the Matt Swanson School of Golf.
